Hand placed over fingerprints on brick of the enslaved laborers who built Menokin

Enslaved people & their descendants

The Menokin Descendant Collective

Our Mission:

As Descendants of the people enslaved at Menokin, we will be a voice for our ancestors. We will preserve their memories by seeking the truth, filling the gaps in our history and accurately telling the stories of their struggles, resilience and accomplishments. Our ultimate goal is to recognize the impact the enslaved people had on shaping our lives and the Nation.

“The Collis Warner Foundation is proud to support the efforts of the Menokin Foundation to explore the history of the enslaved men and women who lived and labored at Menokin over its 165-year history.  For too long the historic interpretation of Southern plantations overlooked or minimized the stories and the contributions of these men and women. We hope Menokin’s research work can illuminate a fuller history.”

— Lisa Collis, The Collis Warner Foundation
