Support the Menokin Descendant Documentary!

We are excited to announce the launch of our Black History Month fundraising campaign to support the documentary, Lord, How Come Me Here directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Lorenzo Dickerson. This film will:

  • Explore the lives and resilience of the enslaved individuals whose strength and perseverance were the foundation of Menokin.

  • Highlight personal narratives derived from meticulous research, oral histories, and archival records.

  • Engage descendants and scholars to ensure the documentary reflects authenticity and deep respect for the truth.

  • Educate audiences nationwide, providing a platform to discuss the lasting impact of slavery and the enduring strength of those who endured it.

Thanks to a generous $12,000 donation from the Patrick M. and Rosalinda Raher Charitable Giving Fund, we kick off this campaign with a strong foundation. Last Black History Month, we raised over $11,000, and we’re building on that momentum to reach our goal of raising $29,000 by February 28, 2025. This will bring us closer to our larger target of $50,000 towards the production costs of the documentary, which totals $99,500.

This documentary is not just a project but a labor of love and an essential step toward truth and reconciliation. Your support is crucial to make it a reality.

This is a small excerpt from the storyline written by Kamala Lane, a descendant of Amanda Beverly and Stafford Gordon.

In interviews, MDET staff and newfound descendants share their hopes for the next steps, including their expectations for the upcoming Descendants’ Day. They also are transparent about any concerns, worries, and setbacks they may have. Will more descendants return? Will we uncover missing information about the people enslaved at Menokin? Or have we reached a dead end?

We return to the Remembrance Structure in the daytime. A time-lapse occurs and within seconds, we see the scene go from daylight to dusk to nighttime. But now in the quiet field shrouded in night, the Remembrance Structure is all aglow with promise."
