Photo Essay: Building the Remembrance Structure at Menokin
The Remembrance Structure was built by a dedicated group of Menokin staff, carpenters, craftsmen, and volunteers incorporating traditional techniques in 2018. The plan was based on the drawings and plans by architect and Menokin Advisory Council member Reid Freeman of REID Architects. Reid based the design on an interpretation of a former slave dwelling that had rested on the very site of the structure, which is suspended above the original corner posts as not disturb the sacred space.
